Time Heals All Wounds
I know that you’ve heard it said many times before that, “time heals all wounds.” If you are like me, you have probably taken this statement as a fact or gospel. You have most likely used this phrase to comfort a hurting friend or a disappointed child. But, other than being a good thing to say, does “time” actually heal all wounds?
Well, sorry to tell you that the answer to that is no! “Time” does not heal all wounds. The word “time” has many definitions, but none of them give “time” the power that we so easily assign it.
One definition of time: an indefinite period.
I love this definition of time, because it speaks to the point of it being indefinite. The clock ticks, the calendar changes, but what happens during that period is undefined until we do something.
Proverbs 6:6-8 “Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise: Which having no guide, overseer, or ruler, provideth her meat in the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest. How long with thou sleep, O sluggard? When wilt thou arise out of they sleep?”
Psalms 31:15 “My times are in thy hand: deliver me from the hand of mine enemies, and from them that persecute me.”
Take this example of baking a cake. I mix all of the ingredients together, pour it in a pan, and then place it in the oven. Now, if I’m making my famous almond pound cake, it needs 90 mins to cook. So, I set the timer for 90 minutes. I come back 90 minutes later expecting to see and smell a finished cake. But, to my surprise there is still just batter in the oven. So, I reason that it needs more “time” because I remember that “time” is powerful all by itself. I set the timer for another 90 minutes and leave. I return and it has now been 3 hours that this cake has set in the oven. Surely that is enough time for it to be finished and complete. Yet, once again I open the oven to disappointment as I find my batter still in a very liquid state.
At this point, I can continue to “give it more time” (which is another popular phrase that assigns time a certain power) or, I can finally begin to look into the cause of my dilemma. I now check that I turned on the oven. Then I check that it is in fact plugged in, (I can also double-check that the electric bill has been paid, lol.) As you can see, each of these solutions require some actions other than just the passage of the time.
Ephesians 5:15-17 “ See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, Redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Wherefore, be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.”
What wounds are you expecting “time” to heal? Do you expect to heal from abuse, neglect, doubt or depression by simply watching time go by?
My friend, time most certainly does not heal wounds. But, there is no wound that GOD can’t heal! Our salvation, our hope, our trust, and our healing is in his Hands!
